We sleep in on Saturday morning and almost miss breakfast. Two other couples are staying at the Step Right Inn, a pair of newlyweds, a few years younger than I am, and one older couple, whose youngest child recently went off to college and who are finally fulfilling their lifelong ambition to visit all fifty states. The younger couple keeps to themselves, cocooned in newly married bliss, but David and Mandy Friedman, the intrepid travelers, seem intent on making new friends along the way. Blake referred to me as his girlfriend when we introduced ourselves, which made me ridiculously happy.

“Where are you folks from?” David asks, once he’s given us a play-by-play of their travels.

“Oakland,” Blake replies, “Cat’s born and bred, but I’m originally from Sacramento. I’m completing my residency. It’s my last year, actually.”

“Will you stay in Oakland, once you’re done?” Mandy asks the question, and it occurs to me that I don’t know the answer. Blake has never mentioned anything beyond the end of this final year. I lean forward, as eager for his reply as the Friedmans.

“At this stage, I’m not sure where I’ll end up. I’ve sent out applications to a number of hospitals across the country. I guess it just depends on who offers me a job.”

The conversation continues, but I’ve tuned out. If Blake gets offered a job somewhere else, what does that mean for us?
